The In Between Phases
A poem for you... the one who is journeying what we know to be healing.
We honor our phases the way we do that of the moon
We announce when we feel empty and unseen like the new moon
We announce when we’ve overcome obstacles and are filled with all things great and powerful like the full moon
We give so much energy and power to these two phases
And while they’re deserving of being spoken about...
What about your crescent moon phase?
You know...the days when you worked so hard to keep going even though--
suicide was a thought
depression was a religion
and hopelessness was a state of mind
-- and they all started to show above ground, spilling out for others to see
Yet you still showed up for the day
Leaving yesterday behind and working hard for a better tomorrow
What about this phase?
What about the quarter moon phase?
You know when you’ve finally identified your purpose and passion, but you don’t know where to begin
You finally have the drive to get up in the morning and show some form of gratitude
You can finally stand tall and not run from your gifts
You’re finally slightly sure
Your stems from the seeds you planted are finally gaining height
But you’re still not celebrating because you don’t see the buds or the pedals
But this stage matters too
Can’t you see that?
What about this phase?
What about the gibbous phase in healing?
You know the almost phase...
You’ve made the plan and now you just have to stick it out long enough to see it come into fruition
You see the buds coming about
You’re finally betting on yourself
But doubt still whispers at night because what you envisioned isn’t here yet
You’re finally moving on from the trauma
But the scenes still replay
With your determination you shut those scenes and voices out and press forward
You suit up for battle everyday
What about the strength this phase gave you?
What about the lessons in these phases?
How could we forget these?
How could we not honor our existence and power within that carried us through every phase ?
How could you not acknowledge all of your phases?
To be here is to say you transmuted the pain, hurt, disappointment and fear
How could you ignore or silence the journey here?
I know there’s beauty in fullness
I know we get excited about the power of the full moon
The beauty of fully bloomed roses
But there’s no fullness if we don’t journey the other stages— no honor for cheating yourself of the journey
Be gentle
Be patient
Be proud
Be loving
Healing does not have a final destination.
Healing is a journey that never ends.
